There has been plenty of snow, lots of bad roads and plenty of cancellations, but according to local authorities, the timing of the winter precipitation has been very helpful in saving tax dollars. Both county road superintendent Mark Mitchel and Berne Mayor John Minch agreed that a majority of the storm precipitation, mainly snow, fell during the day when it was more expedient financially to handle the challenges of poor roads and streets.
"Earlier when the snow came, most of it could be cleaned up in an eight-hour shift," said Mitchel. "This last batch was a little tougher but we are still doing okay on manpower hours."....
