Gulley, rest of Guard team deploy for Afghanistan

Huntington County Tab:

Huntington North High School Principal Maj. Jeremy Gulley and the rest of the Indiana Army National Guard's 3-19th Agribusiness Development Team left for Afghanistan on Saturday, Sept. 25.

First, though, Gulley and his team visited Franklin Community High School to shadow teachers.

Gulley announced in February that he was returning to active duty in a role that has him overseeing contracts for money and approvals to manage projects in a coastal region of Afghanistan.....

Harvest this year is early and progressing well due to weather

According to a recent study by the Purdue University Extension Office, this year's corn harvest is rapidly progressing, due to an earlier start and favorable weather conditions.

Bob Nielson, professor of agronomy at Purdue University stated that the crop has grown quickly and matured early. It has dried well in the field, which means farmers should spend less on mechanized drying methods to bring grain down to desired moisture levels. Most of the crop could be harvested by early October if Indiana continues to have dry weather.....

Huntington University teaching group making connections with Chinese that could be long-term

Update: On Sept. 28, 2010, Huntington University officially announced the signing of a five-year contract with Doumen School District in Zhuhai, China.

The contract will begin in 2011 and allows HU’s Institute for TESOL Studies to offer English training in the school district for the next half-decade. The ITS hopes that the contract will open up more opportunities for interaction between the Doumen School District, HU and the Huntington County Community School Corporation.....

Marion shades HNHS booters, 2-1, with lone second-half goal

Host Marion broke a 1-1 halftime tie with the only goal of the second half and hung on to defeat the Huntington North High School boys' soccer team, 2-1, on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

The Vikings, took a 1-0 lead in the game on a nifty Tayler Johnson shot frm about 25 yards out, assisted by Zach Schaffter, reported HNHS head Coach Steve Saddington.....

Council gives final approval to ban on sale of synthetic marijuana in city

An ordinance banning the sale of synthetic marijuana received final approval from the Huntington Common Council on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

The ordinance will become law immediately after its publication in a local newspaper, a requirement that is expected to be fulfilled either late this week or early next week, Clerk-Treasurer Christi Scher said....

Lutheran to offer breast cancer education throughout October

FORT WAYNE — In recognition of October as breast cancer awareness month, Lutheran Health Network’s Senior Circle will offer a free “Breakfast and Learn” sessions arranged at three Fort Wayne hospitals, as October is breast cancer awareness month.

The program is designed for anyone 50 years of age or older. Reservations are needed by calling 425-3087 because seating is limited. A mammogram may also be scheduled after the breakfast program at all participating hospitals, Lutheran Health officials said in a news release......

Vera Bradley moves spring sale

United Way picks Stephenson as new president

Stephenson, 56, retired from Lincoln Financial Group in 2007 where he was the vice president of corporate planning and development. He is a graduate of Indiana University with a BS in Accounting and prior to returning to Fort Wayne in 1998 worked in and was active in the Indianapolis community.....

Good old-fashioned preaching at Pioneer

Those attending the old-time worship service Sunday, Sept. 26 at Hier's Park are in for some good old-fashioned preaching.

The non-denominational worship service is part of the activities for the Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival and will begin at 9 a.m. at the outdoor stage.

Luke Jackson will lead the morning's service. His congregation will also hold regular services at their home church, Huntington Church of Christ, 1105 S. Broadway, at 10:30 a.m.....

Williams makes Wust goal stand up for Vikings' soccer win

Isaac Wust scored in the second half and Kyle Williams had seven saves to lead the Huntington North High School boys' soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Logansport on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Wust's 13th goal of the season came off an assist from Colin Downey, and Williams made the mark stand up as HNHS raised its record to 7-3-1 on the season, and 2-2 in the North Central Conference......

Trails officials hope third time is a charm for covered bridge funding

Local officials are hoping that the third time will be a charm in applying for funding to repair the Ceylon Covered Bridge. Geneva Town Manager Doug Milligan, also representing South Adams Trails, Inc., said that Adams County Commissioners have agreed to be the lead applicant in applying for funds for bridge repairs through the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA)....

Pioneer Fest adding several new attractions this coming weekend

Teddy Roosevelt, buffalo burgers and harmonica blues are all new attractions at this year's Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival.

The 35th annual festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25 and 26, at Hier's Park. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, with an old-fashioned worship service at 9 a.m. on Sunday....

Lady Viking golfers heading to regional

The Huntington North High School girls' golf team punched its ticket to regional competition next week by placing second at the Huntington North Golf Sectional on Saturday, Sept. 18, at LaFontaine Golf Couse.

The Lady Vikings shot a team score of 382 to place runner-up to Marion, which won the meet with a 357, and ahead of third place Manchester, which shot a 386. The top three teams along with the top three individuals advance to the New Chrysler Regional next week.....

Sinkhole reveals a piece of history in Warren

Huntington County TAB:

Three weeks ago, the Town of Warren was surprised by a piece of history that has been lying dormant for decades.

A small sinkhole cropped up on 2nd Street. Upon investigation, a deteriorating pre-existing waterway was found to be the cause.

"We started digging after we found the sinkhole and popped a manhole about 10 feet away from it," states Curt Day, utility manager. "That's when we found the underground waterway."
Day adds that there are still Warren residents alive who remember when the waterway was open....

Legion Post 160 sponsoring concert for Honor Flight funds

That seems like a lifetime ago, and technically, it is to a generation of Huntington County residents who have been born since then, and have always had The TAB available to them.

In some respects, it seems unbelievable to us, because back then, it was all about getting our foot in the door and getting off the ground....

Allen County residents can get rid of old tires at Oct. 2 event

FORT WAYNE — Allen County residents with old tires can get rid of them for a fee Oct. 2 during the Allen County Solid Waste Management District’s annual tire amnesty day.

Tires collected at the event are recycled into usable products such as garden hoses, rubberized asphalt and playground cover, waste management officials said in a news release....

Hushed silence falls across Decatur in honoring fallen Adams County hero

At exactly 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, total silence fell over the crowd at the Bellmont High School Theater. All that was heard were the footsteps of the family of Staff Sergeant Phillip Jenkins, as they marched quietly to go before the flag-draped basket bearing the remains of one who had been killed in action in Sept. 7 in Iraq. A large crowd had gathered at the high school for his memorial service....

Barkley brings heart of Swiss heritage to chamber

Sheree Barkley has always been proud of her Swiss and Mennonite heritage. Barkley (formerly Yoder) was raised in Berlin, Ohio, a small community located deep in the heart of eastern Ohio’s Swiss heritage country. Her father had been raised as an Amish and her mother was raised in the Mennonite Church.
These days, Barkley feels that she has been given the opportunity of a lifetime as the newly appointed executive director of the Berne Chamber of Commerce. Barkley follows Connie Potter, who retired in August.....

Adams County Sanitarian Terry Smith reported on Monday that Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) had been found in a mosquito sample from Berne.
According to a press release issued by Smith, Dr. Michael Sinsko, senior medical entomologist from the state department of health, called Monday....

Police searching for robbery suspect

7th annual Bike Challenge set to roll this weekend, Sept. 18-19

The cycling event, organized by the Huntington County Visitor Bureau and 3 Rivers Velo Sport Bike Club, attracts both tour riders and competitive racers to compete for cash prizes or simply ride the scenic course through Huntington County.

The competition race is sanctioned by USA Cycling and runs 140 miles (70 miles each day) both on and off road.....

Farm equipment likely to be on road as harvest nears

The Indiana State Police released a list of reminders for drivers as area farmers prepare to harvest their crops in the coming months.

During this time, large farm equipment will be on the roads and may impede traffic, the ISP said in a news release. Motorists should be cautious when approaching a hillcrest or curve because farm implements may require additional roadway space. Be prepared to slow down, pull to the side of the road or even to stop......

Heritage Pointe, Souder family hail century mark this year

Zoo rides dip to $1 during September

FORT WAYNE — Zoogoers will pay $1 for rides at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo for all of September.

Patrons can ride the miniature train, endangered species carousel, river ride and sky safari for just one token instead of the regular price of two tokens, zoo officials said in a news release. Tokens cost $1 each and are available at all rides. The offer does not include pony rides. No coupon is needed to take advantage of the discount.

$300 fine for restraint violations

The elderly Portland woman arrested recently in Adams County for 17 child restraint violations pleaded guilty to those violations on Tuesday in Adams Superior Court.
Judge Patrick R. Miller then fined Mary C. Bollinger, 82, $300, which was a break from the $425 he could have imposed, since the fine for each such.....
