Stell scores four TDS as Viking JV rolls past Western

Huntington County TAB:

Sophomore Braydin Stell scored four touchdowns and the defense forced seven fumbles as the Huntington North High School junior varsity football team crushed Western, 41-14, on Monday, Aug. 30.

Stell scored one touchdown rushing, one on a kickoff return and two receiving as the Viking junior varsity improved to 2-0 on the season.....

Huntington soldier, Chad Clements, dies in Afghan deployment

A Huntington soldier was killed Monday, Aug. 30, in Afghanistan, just weeks after he arrived in the war-torn country.

Chad Derek Clements, 26, left the United States Aug. 5 for the deployment in Afghanistan.

Just before he left, he had signed up for membership in American Legion Post 85, where his sister, Danielle Clements, works as secretary.....

National Serv-All closed Labor Day, will adjust trash pickup

Huntington County Republican Party Chairwoman Angie Garner appointed Mike Rohler to fill the empty Andrews Town Council president position on Thursday, Aug. 19.

The slot was left open after Bob Gray resigned from the position in July.

Rohler has resided in Andrews since December 2009 after moving to Huntington County in October 2008.....

The spill, caused by a broken pipeline operated by Enbridge Energy Partners L.P., affected thousands of animals and is being called one of the worst natural disasters in Michigan history. ....

Seeking registration for hoop tournament

The Huntington North boys' basketball team will be hosting a Back to School 3-on-3 Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11, beginning at 10 a.m. at Huntington North High School.

The tournament will be made up of girls and boys teams in grades 3-12. There is a cost per team. Each player will receive a water bottle and winners receive medals and T-shirts....

The First Street Neighborhood Association will host "A Day in the Neighborhood" on Saturday, Aug. 28.

School board gives approval to teachers’ contract

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees approved a contract with its teachers for the 2010-11 school year by a 4-2 vote on Monday, Aug. 23.

Thom Duncan spoke on behalf of the Huntington County Teachers Association, noting that the association realizes that the board has had to make difficult financial decisions, and that the association examined the budget closely to reach a negotiable contract.....

Markle residents to be ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ this weekend at Wildcat Festival

With a celebration that's been around since 1977, locals can expect some returning favorites at this year's Markle Wildcat Festival, to be held Aug. 27-29 with the theme "Wizard of Oz."

The festival kicks off on Friday evening with the MarkleBank Pork BBQ Dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the main tent at Markle Park. Tickets are available in advance at the bank.

Registration for the Pie-Bake Off is between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Judging will begin at 6 p.m.....

Neighbor says cleanup of Markle property needs to happen soon

Markle resident Mary Montgomery asked the Markle Town Council on Wednesday, Aug. 18, for help in getting her neighbor's property cleaned up.

Montgomery, a resident at 325 S. Clark St., said her neighbor, John McCabe, is in violation of nuisance codes on two properties.

She submitted a complaint to the council regarding more than 27 visible automobiles and what she alleges is an infestation of mice and rats and "the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes" - standing water in overturned scrap metal.....

St. Mark’s celebrates 45 years of service

In September, 1965 St. Mark’s Preschool opened its doors with seven students enrolled. Five of those children ended the year under the guidance of Joan Wurm, who took a year break from beginning her nursing training. Mrs. Wurm went on to a long career as a nurse and was one of the founding members of the Monroeville EMS program.....

Adams County included in tour for Chinese bike riders

Thanks to Bob Davenport, founder of the internationally acclaimed Christian bike riding mission, Wandering Wheels, a group of 25 Chinese riders had the opportunity to ride their bikes on the back roads of Adams County on Monday. In fact, back roads are what their American bike-riding excursion is all about. Through the strategic planning of Davenport and other Wandering Wheels veterans, the group is spending several days examining sites not normally available for foreign tourists who visit the area.
In the early 1980’s, Wandering Wheels took a team of cyclists to China.

FORT WAYNE — The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo has the only pair of rare Javan gibbons in the United States. now on display at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, which is the only zoo in the United States to exhibit this endangered species.

Javan gibbons an endangered species and found only on the island of Java in Indonesia, the endangered Javan gibbon is under intense pressure from the island’s burgeoning human population. About 4,000 Javan gibbons remain in tiny patches of rain forest on the island, according to a news release from the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo.....

Auction money makes comeback

Two animals set new record prices per head during the 2010 Huntington County 4-H auction, which topped the $300,000 mark as a total of 826 animals were sold off to buyers on Thursday night, July 29.

Dairy’s new owner pledges new approach in meeting with Huntington County Commissioners

After a local dairy farm caused controversy in the past several years over the farm's environmental stewardship, the farm's new owner approached the Huntington County Commissioners on Monday, Aug. 2, pledging a new approach to the farm's management.

Johan De Groot, the son of the dairy's former owner, Johannas De Groot, said he will work to take care of the environment around the farm and be a good neighbor to the county residents living in the area.

This year's United Way 2010 Team Mini-Triathlon is expanding to allow runners an opportunity to participate by entering a 5K Fun Run, which will be held Sept. 12, on the Parkview Huntington Hospital campus.

Parkview Huntington Hospital is the title sponsor for the Team Mini-Triathlon, a One-Mile Fun Walk and the 5K Fun Run.
