Four arrested for string of burglaries

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE - Four men were arrested by the Fort Wayne Police Department in connection with a string of residential burglaries on the city's north side after an online system led officers to the suspects.

Police arrested one man Monday during the attempted burglary of a home in the 6400 block of Cathedral Oaks.

That investigation led to the arrest of two other suspects for the same incident. Eventually, all four suspects were taken into custody, according to a story from our news partner WANE-TV.....

Farmers may see income boost: Hurt

Decatur Daily Democrat:

Purdue University professor Chris Hurt delivered an analysis of current national economic thinking, along with Purdue's annual agricultural predictions, in Monday's Ag Outlook event at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Monroe, sponsored by the Purdue extension office in Adams County.
Speaking before some 80 people, Dr. Hurt said the United States has been facing inflation since the 1960s and 1970s, began strongly battling inflation in the 1980s, and now the Federal Reserve is trying to create some inflation because the economy, harmed by the sagging housing market, could tip into deflation, which would undercut normal consumption and cause long-term problems....

Courthouse’s access ramp closed; new procedures set

Decatur Daily Democrat:

The handicap access ramp on the west side of the Adams County Courthouse has been closed for repairs and may be open again in about two weeks, depending on weather.
In the meantime, the county commissioners have put in place procedures to assist those who have physical disabilities in being served by Adams Circuit Court, the county clerk, and the county prosecutor, all of which have their offices in the courthouse.
Signs will be posted outside the building to list the telephone numbers of those three departments, so people can call ahead to get help in entering the building or in having paperwork, etc. brought to them for whatever has to be done....

Major power loss hits city, rural area

Decatur Daily Democrat:

A breakdown in the relay system at an American Electric Power substation on US 224 in Decatur caused a power failure at midafternoon Monday that affected more than 1,400 AEP customers in the city and in the rural area extending several miles west of Decatur.
Dave Mayne, a spokesman at the Indiana and Michigan Power office in Fort Wayne, said this morning that the problem occurred shortly after 3 p.m. and all customers were reconnected by 5:36 p.m.....

City to consider financial help for planned fertilizer terminal

Members of the Huntington Common Council will be asked to approve a grant from the city to Helena Chemical to help pay for infrastructure improvements at the company's planned new facility on Beaty Drive.

The proposal will be presented to council members at their meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 6:45 a.m. The meeting will be held in the mayor's conference room, on the third floor of the City Building in Huntington.

The proposal calls for Helena Chemical to receive a grant of up to $200,000 from city CEDIT funds.....

Local soldier excels as she continues family legacy

Army Basic Combat Training can be a daunting hurdle for anybody joining the military. Army Pfc. Alyssia Brown completed basic when she was a junior at Huntington North High School.

Army Advanced Individual Training to become a military police officer can also sound intimidating to those thinking of joining the armed forces. Brown enlisted before she turned 18, and graduated at the top of her class.

Brown graduated with distinguished honors from the Military Police Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, on Oct. 21. She received commendations from the post commander of Fort Leonard Wood, U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command representatives and the president of military police for her outstanding leadership ability, discipline and performance while under her training environment's command.....

Late General charge lifts Wayne over BHS

The Wayne General ruined a strong early effort by Bellmont with a 13-2 run in the third period and then continued its attack in the final period to score a 59-46 victory Wednesday night in the opening boys varsity basketball game of the season for both teams.
BHS coach Larry Patterson said that despite the loss, he's taking a lot of positives from the game noting "this is a totally different year. We came in confident and played hard. There are just some things in certain situations that we'll have to correct."....

Yorkies win round 1, topple Braves 35-25

PERU — With five consecutive wins starting at 103 pounds, No. 5 Yorktown overcame a 22-12 Bellmont lead to score a 35-25 win over the No. 11 Braves in the title match at the Peru Invitational Saturday.
It was the third straight win for Yorktown over Bellmont. The Braves had won all 15 previous meetings.
"Ten points, that's a lot better than last year when we lost by 33, and we closed the gap pretty good. But Yorktown has a very good team. It's going to be a challenge," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, whose Braves defeated Peru, 62-18, downed Huntington North 34-21, slammed Delta 78-6, and topped Garrett 46-19 to get to the final match.....

Braves press out 68-43 victory over Warriors

WOODBURN — Bellmont turned up the heat at Woodburn Saturday night, scoring at least 15 points in all four quarters while limiting the host Warriors to just 38 shots for the game in a 68-43 non-conference victory.
"We scored some points off of our press, and that's what I wanted us to do tonight," stated Bellmont coach Larry Patterson, who saw his Braves even their early-season mark at 1-1....

Car driver suffers skull fracture in hitting buggy

Decatur Daily Democrat:

Five members of a Fort Wayne family were injured in a car-buggy mishap at 6:53 p.m. Friday on U.S. 27.
An Adams County Sheriff's Department report said the accident occurred when a buggy driven by John V. Shetler, Jr., 19, rural Geneva, pulled out of a driveway near C.R. 300S onto U.S. 27 into the path of a car driven northbound by Brad A. Canter, 38, Fort Wayne.
The occupants of the Canter vehicle were injured in the resulting collision and taken to area hospitals.....

Black still hospital’s 2010 color

Despite a slower than average previous month that caused a $232,254 drop in revenues at the Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH), hospital trustees recently learned that the hospital still is $318,791 in the black for the 2010 year.
"Most rural hospitals our size would be tickled pink to have the financial picture we do," pointed out Adams Health Network (AHN) Executive Director Marvin L. Baird after the financial report was delivered to trustees by Dane Wheeler, AHN chief financial officer.....

Thomas, Herron blitz Rainbow Lake 5K field

Two runners with record setting on their minds had freezing temperatures to deal with Saturday at the Rainbow Lake 5K road race in Geneva. The weather won out as the year-old marks set by Nick and Lauren Johnson stood against a record-sized field in the three year-old event.
Pennville’s Ian Thomas won the event for the second time, taking the overall title in 15:36.7 – 18 seconds off the record pace set by Johnson under ideal conditions in 2009. ....

Local couple narrowly escapes disaster in Haitian mission trip

Bonnie Zurcher of Berne wasn't quite sure what all was going on around her earlier this month during a perilous trip to Haiti, but she knew that it was "anything but normal" when CNN started moving in a team for international broadcasting right outside the building where she was staying.
Zurcher and her husband, Deryll, were part of a delegation of 11 short-term missionaries delivering motorcycles to pastors in Haiti in representation of the Christian Motorcycle Association. Team members were to present the cycles to seven pastors in Haiti and four in the Dominican Republic as a gift from the Missionary Ventures portion of that organization.....

Eastbrook edges both Salamonie boys' basketball teams

Huntington County Tab:

Salamonie School's eighth grade boys' basketball team was edged by Eastbrook Middle School, 42-38, on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Walker Spahr led the charge for Salamonie with 13 points. Andrew Nelson had 11 and Austin Eltzroth added eight.

In seventh grade action, Eastbrook slipped by Salamonie 52-49.

Isaac Smith took control of the game, scoring 32 points. Spencer Sharpe added 10.

2.36 rainfall here in past 2 days

The turkeys who survived Thanksgiving 2010 in Indiana may have drowned before the holiday was over.
Heavy rains hit the state Wednesday and Thursday, bringing flash flood warnings in many counties.
Officials at the Decatur weather station said this morning that a total of 2.36 inches of rain fell in the city over the two days, swelling the St. Marys River to 11.4 feet at 7 a.m. today — an 8-foot rise since a 3.4-foot reading at the same time Wednesday.
The National Weather Service said this morning that no more rain is likely in this area through the weekend, but frigid temperatures have taken over. After a high of 54 degrees on Thanksgiving, the temperature bottomed out a 22 at 7 a.m. today....

Purdue plays its final home football game of the 2010 season this Saturday and if you wander around the tailgating which will be in evidence, you may see the famed Boilermaker Hearse.
It comes from Decatur and it has become famous enough to make a special national tailgate list produced earlier this season by The Associated Press....

Kaylor a ‘keeper of the path’ for free-range turkeys for last two years

As families gather around to enjoy Thanksgiving meals, the centerpiece of most tables will be the turkey.

And while many opt for the store-bought variety, others will venture down the path less traveled - one littered with free-range turkeys.

Huntington resident Blaine Kaylor has been one of the "keepers" of that path for the last two years.

"We started raising free-range turkeys in February of 2008," states Kaylor. "We got them as part of a 4-H project that my son and daughter were going to be doing."
Kaylor says after his first acquisition of a mixture of 20 hens and toms, the venture blossomed.

Schenkel hot but Lady Vikings not in hoop loss to Snider

Kayla Schenkel's career-high 22 points wasn't nearly enough for the Huntington North High School girls' basketball team as it lost to visiting Fort Wayne Snider, 68-51, on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Schenkel, a senior, hit 10 of 12 shots from the field, but the rest of the Lady Vikes combined for just 12 out of 41 shooting - including 0 for 11 from 3-point range - as they dropped to 2-2 on the season.

Liesl Davenport scored 12 points in support of Schenkel and also had a team high seven rebounds....

Ruble grads ROTC course

Leah M. Ruble graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, WA.

The 32 days of training provide professional training and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, administration and logistical support.

Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet's officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet's intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina....

Adams County jobless rate dips to 9.1%

The jobless rate in Adams County continued its downward trend in October.
According to statistics released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the county's unemployment rate dipped to 9.1 percent last month, down from 9.4 percent in September and 9.9 percent in August.
Adams County began 2010 with an unemployment rate of 11.8 percent in January. The number has fallen slowly but steadily throughout the year — with the exception of June jobless figures, which showed a slight increase over the previous month.....

Turnovers stymie Starfires in opener

With a huge chunk of their offense graduated off of last year’s team, South Adams was hoping to find some players to step in and fill the void created by Nick Teeter’s departure. They did some of that Tuesday night in their season opener at home with Northeastern – it just wasn’t until the second half when they were able to hang onto the ball a little better....

Students from Michael Baer's earth science and physical science classes at South Adams High School have been working on a dream for the past couple of years that is just about to flow. A group of class members will be accompanying Baer this summer to install a water treatment device at Nehemiah Vision Ministries and the surrounding community located outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.....

UPDATED: Police ID man arrested after five hour standoff

East Allen Times:


FORT WAYNE - The Fort Wayne Police Department was able to get a 28-year-old man to surrender peacefully Tuesday after a standoff that lasted more than five hours.

According to a our news partners at WANE-TV, police were called just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to a domestic situation at the home on Merivale Street.

When police arrived they learned the male suspect, who has a military background, was inside the house with several weapons and a child. The child was released to police custody....

Over 10,000 sign up to recycle

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE – More than 10,000 city residents have reserved their new all-in-one recycling cart just three weeks after the program was unveiled.

“We have seen an overwhelmingly positive response from city residents,” Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said in a news release. “Our goal is to increase recycling participation in Fort Wayne households from 30 to 60 percent. I urge residents to register for the new cart.”...

Jobless rate dips slightly in Fort Wayne, Allen County

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE — Unemployment numbers in Fort Wayne and Allen County dropped slightly for October.

The jobless rate for Fort Wayne is 9.4 percent, down from 9.6 percent in September. Allen County's unemployment rate was 9.5 percent for October, a slight drop from its 9.8 percent rate in September.

Allen County ranks 36th in the state for its October rate, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.....

Two more arrests in holdup

In what could be considered the "last hurrah" for Decatur Police Department Detective Eric "Keebie" Meyer, two men wanted in connection with the armed robbery on November 10 at the S.M.O.K.E.S. Tobacco Shop were apprehended in Fort Wayne on Monday.
Meyer, who has served with the Decatur Police Department for nearly 31 years, many of them as a detective, noted that Decatur police, in conjunction with the Fort Wayne Police Department, arrested Gregory T. Clark, 19, Fort Wayne, and Marquel L. Bright, 21, Fort Wayne on charges of armed robbery. Clark is also facing a criminal confinement charge.....

Fire destroys part of building

Decatur Daily Democrat:

An addition to a business building on Patterson St. in Industrial Park was demolished as firefighters extinguished a blaze late Sunday night.
However, the two businesses located in the main portion of the building — Sportsman's Lodge and Haugk Companies — are operating as usual, with no damage, Decatur Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hitchcock said this morning.
Hitchcock said workers in the addition were cutting iron with a torch on Sunday afternoon and a spark started a fire which was unnoticed by the workers when they left.....

Trinity again having free Thanksgiving dinner

Trinity United Meth-odist Church will again be providing Thanksgiving dinner free of charge to the community on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The meal includes turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, bread and butter, dressing, cranberry or fruit Jell-O, drinks and pies for dessert.

Meals can also be delivered to shut-ins or families within the county who would rather eat at home.

HU women blitz Trinity in first half, coast to big win

The Huntington University women's basketball team blitzed visiting Trinity Christian College in the first half and wound up with a 77-46 win on Saturday, Nov. 20, in the Northview Inn and Suites Classic.

Picking up their fifth win in six games this season, the Foresters got double figure scoring performances from four players, led by Kelsey Green with 15 points.

Allison Greene and Lauren Meese each tallied 13 points and Amy Kramer came off the bench to add in 10 points....

National-Serv All adjust pick up schedule around Thanksgiving

FORT WAYNE – National Serv-All will not pick up garbage Thursday in observance of Thanksgiving.

All National Serv-All operations will be performed a day later on Friday and Saturday. This means residential waste and/or recycling that is normally collected on Thursday will now be collected on Friday, and residential waste and/or recycling normally collected on Friday will be now be collected on Saturday.....

Galloping Gobbler set to have 2,000-plus participate

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE — More than 2,000 people have pre-registered for the Galloping Gobbler 4 Miler Thanksgiving Day run and walk.

The race starts on Leesburg Road near the Hutzell Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Saint Francis. Participants head south on Leesburg Road to the entrance of the historic Lindenwood Cemetery. Most of the race takes place on the winding roads within the wooded cemetery before runners head back to the finish line on USF's campus.....

East Allen Family Resource Center aims to raise $25K at rally tonight to stay open

East Allen Times:

The East Allen Family Resource Center will host a rally today to bring awareness to the need and benefit of after-school programs in East Allen County and to raise funds to keep the doors from closing to the more than 125 youth it serves daily. The rally will be at the agency’s facility, 6330 Prize Ave., Riverhaven, it starts at 4:45 PM.....

Madison leads Squaws to win; Starfires defeated

Bellmont senior center Madison Schultz continued her inside dominance Saturday night, scoring 15 points to lead Bellmont to a 50-41 victory over Heritage in an area non-conference girls basketball game.
Dana Kaczmarek scored nine points and Payton Schultz seven for Bellmont. No other statistical details were released by the school.
The win puts Bellmont at 2-1 on the season. The Squaws, with only a few practices with the entire team because of the state volleyball run, fell to Bishop Dwenger last Tuesday in the season opener, then came back and won a big road game at Jay County on Friday night, 39-34.....

No. 11 Mat Braves to open

Bellmont’s wrestling Braves, rated No. 11 in the preseason Indiana Wrestling Coaches poll, will open their season at Columbia City Tuesday night
in the annual NHC opener. Veteran coach Brent Faurote, beginning his
23rd season at the helm, welcomes back most of his starting lineup after losing just three senior starters through graduation. However, the Braves may start the season without a regular 103-pounder.
Key returnees include heavyweight Daniel Meyer, fourth in the IHSAA State Wrestling finals last year, and Travis Thatcher, seventh at 189 last year and.....

Deer at the door

"It was wild!" — literally and figuratively.
That was the reaction by Zack Gagle, an employee of Eichhorn Jewelry in downtown Decatur, about 20 minutes after he witnessed a medium-sized deer, a doe, with her front hooves up on the top of the front door glass.
Gagle said he was in the rear of the business, at 130 N. Second St., when he heard noises and came to the front door to see the deer leaning against it at about 9:15 a.m. on Thursday. The doe left a lot of saliva on the glass, but did no damage. The saliva was easily wiped away.....

County getting first woman GP

A new wave in family practice medicine in Adams County is on the horizon as it was learned that the first woman general practitioner in county history will locate her office in Decatur after the first of the year.
Dr. Crystal Jencks has signed a contract with Adams Memorial Hospital to become the latest physician who is a hospital employee. She will start her practice in the middle of January in suite C of the Physician's Office Building at 815 High Street.....

Nation's Capitol rolled out the red carpet for local WW II vets

Three local World War II veterans joined 76 others from Northeast Indiana recently to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Berne residents Vaughn Schindler, James McCrory and Kenneth Sprunger all traveled on Nov. 10 to visit the memorial that was constructed in their honor....

Panthers throttle struggling Starfires

Still struggling to find its offensive groove, South Adams surrendered a 51-15 loss at home Friday night to Eastbrook.
The Panthers (1-1) shot out to a 10-0 lead before Lyndsey Chandler scored South Adams’ first points. It was more than two minutes later before Chandler scored again and Eastbrook was in front 17-4.....

Warren Farmers Market on Nov. 20

The Warren Farmers Market will have a special holiday market on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Town Annex Building on the corner of 2nd and Wayne streets.

Regular vendors will offer pies, cakes, Rabb's meat, Van Buren Lions tenderloins, Tri Kappa nuts and many other items.

Next door, the Pulse Opera Theatre lobby will feature craft vendors as well as hot chocolate and coffee.

The Pulse box office will be open and tickets for "Miracle on 34th Street" will be available.

Homestead student honored by Colts for service to troops

East Allen Times:

INDIANAPOLIS – Homestead High School student Alison Mansfield was honored by the Indianapolis Colts as an Anthem Angel.

Mansfield was recognized at the Colts home game Nov. 14 for her outstanding contribution to the community.

Mansfield, 15, has made it her mission to serve those who serve our country. Inspired after meeting a severely wounded soldier on Veteran’s Day in 2005, Alison has donated over 1,000 hours of her time to Operation U.S. Troop Support, an organization she founded that oversees several military service projects.....

Dwenger clips Squaws 47-39

Bishop Dwenger jumped out to a 29-21 lead at the half and then held off a late Bellmont rally to post a 47-39 non-conference girls varsity basketball win at the Teepee Tuesday night.
It was opening night of the season for the Squaws who had to push back the start of their girls season due to the state championship volleyball run. The fact that "we're still not in basketball shape" and "first game jitters" were noted as factors in the BHS loss by coach Tory Fuelling....

Placing Christmas box in the hands of children sparks joyful heart

Donna Luginbill joined other volunteers in packing shoeboxes for Samaritan Purse's Operation Christmas Child project earlier this week.
"It gives me such a joyful heart to do this," said Luginbill. "These boxes are not that big. I wish that we could give more."
"There are so many kids that wouldn't get anything for Christmas," noted Tina Fourman. "Through these boxes, we can help them have something."....

Fort Wayne soldier killed Tuesday in Afghanistan

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE — The body of a Fort Wayne soldier killed in Afghanistan will arrive back in the United States Thursday.

Thirty year old Staff Sergeant Kevin Pape died Tuesday, when the Taliban attacked his unit during operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, according to a story from our news partners at WANE-TV.

Pape was assigned to Co. C, 1st Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment, at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.....

Cunegin to become Turnstone's new CFO

East Allen Times:

Earlene Cunegin, chief financial officer of the Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau, has been named to a similar post at Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities, the bureau announced.

Cunegin will join Turnstone as CFO Dec. 20.

Cunegin, who’s worked at the Women’s Bureau for 10 years, said in a statement she is looking forward to overseeing “a larger budget in a position that allows me to focus solely on the financial health of an important nonprofit agency in Fort Wayne.”.....

Public meeting tonight to discuss changing railroad crossing at South Anthony and Wayne Trace

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE – A public meeting tonight will discuss a study done to separate the Norfolk-Southern Railroad crossing at South Anthony Boulevard just north of Wayne Trace.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. in the Magee O’Connor Theatre at Indiana Tech’s Andorfer Commons, 1600 East Washington Blvd.

Traffic counts by the Northern Indiana Regional Coordinating Council show that 14,000 to 15,000 vehicles travel Anthony Boulevard each day. As many as 35 freight trains cross Anthony Boulevard just north of Wayne Trace daily causing congestion and vehicle idling for drivers, according to a news release from city officials. As trains halt traffic flow, vehicles may idle for 10 minutes or more.....

HU men's hoop team shatters Ohio State-Newark

Huntington County Tab:

The Huntington University men's basketball team shattered visiting Ohio State University-Newark, 109-58, on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

OSUN only had a three-point lead for a brief eight seconds at the beginning of the game before back-to-back three-pointers by Tyler Shively tied the game, then subsequently gave Huntington the lead by the 18:52 mark.

The Foresters never gave up that lead, and scored more points in the second half than the Titans did the entire game....

Augustine to assume 122nd lead

Col. David L. Augustine will assume command of the 122nd Fighter Wing, based at Baer Field in Fort Wayne, in January.

Augustine will succeed Col. Jeffrey A. Soldner, who plans to retire. Soldner has served as commander of the 122nd Fighter Wing since 2004. He joined the Indiana Air Guard in 1972 while attending Purdue University.
Augustine currently serves as vice wing commander of the 127th Wing, based at Selfridge Air National Base in Michigan.

The 122nd Fighter Wing has also been selected to be a part of a new task force designed to react in the event of an attack using weapons of mass destruction.....

Pieces of Harry Potter have made way into lives of HU professor and wife

Pieces of Harry Potter have made their way into the lives - and home - of Huntington University psychology professor Tanner Babb and his wife Julie.

The Huntington residents are displaying their Harry Potter collection at the Huntington City-Township Public Library in anticipation of the latest installment of the young wizard's story, which hits theaters Friday, Nov. 19.

Babb says he really picked up collecting when the fourth book, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," was released in 2000. The anticipation and excitement ran deep while waiting for the next installment to hit the shelves.....

Altered villas okayed

A proposal to make four single villas into two larger villas at the Woodcrest Retirement Center was approved Wednesday night at the monthly board of trustees meeting of the Adams Health Network (AHN).
AHN Executive Director Marvin L. Baird said the changes will convert four villas that are currently one-bedroom, one-bathroom, one-car garage units into a pair of two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-car garage villas. He said the villas to be affected by the change — units 1 and 2 and 37 and 38 — are currently empty and that Woodcrest already has one interested tenant when the conversion is done.
Baird said there are currently 42 villas at Woodcrest and 10 are empty. The great majority of those villas are of the one-bedroom, one-bathroom variety, and as evidenced by the long-standing vacancy of some villas at Woodcrest, there is not a great demand for those accommodations....

United Way gets Lilly boost

Jim Compton, executive director of the United Way of Adams County (UWAC), has announced that the Eli Lilly Foundation in Indianapolis has approved the UWAC for a grant which will provide matching funds.
“During the present campaign to raise funds for 2011, all new donors’ gifts will be matched, dollar for dollar,” Compton said. “For those who were able to support the United Way last year, any increase will be matched dollar for dollar.....

Dwenger led 14-8 after one quarter and extended its lead over the next two quarters, going into the final period with a 38-26 lead. Bellmont (0-1) outscored Dwenger 13-9 in the fourth quarter.
Madison Schultz led Bellmont with 15 points. Payton Schultz added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sara Williamson scored five points, Dana Kaczmarek had three, Mikala Quinn and Taylor Kuhnle both scored two.....

Limberlost State Site director Randy Lehman describes his mood these days as "excited and upbeat" about the possibility of groundbreaking for the new welcome center as being, "soon."
"I'm pretty excited to know that all is left is nine percent," said Lehman. "That final amount could be tough to raise. I'm hoping that it won't be. There are still a lot of local businesses who could contribute but haven't.
"We are required to have all of the money together before the Indiana Department of Natural Resources puts the project out to bid,' continued Lehman.....

History Center's 25th annual gingerbread fest starts Nov. 26

FORT WAYNE — The History Center's Festival of Gingerbread will celebrate its 25th when the three-week long event opens Nov. 26.

The festival, which raises money to support programs at the History Center, has become a holiday tradition that boasts an attendance of more than 10,000, who come annually to see the fanciful gingerbread creations on display.

This year’s Silver Anniversary festival begins runs through Dec. 12. ......

Man in critical condition after head on collision

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE — A 73-year-old man is in critical condition after a head on collision just before 1 p.m. Monday in the 7500 block of W. Jefferson Boulevard.

The Fort Wayne Police Department said the man, driving a 1999 Mercury Villager, was driving east along W. Jefferson Boulevard when it collided with a 2011 Kia Soul forcing the Kia Soul into the median. Witnesses told police the Mercury Villager continued east bound and hit a 1994 Chevy Astro van, forcing that vehicle into a ditch where it rolled over onto its top. Officers learned the Mercury Villager continued east, crossed the median of W. Jefferson Boulevard, and collided head on with the Pontiac Grand Am that was traveling west bound before coming to a rest in the west bound lanes of the 7500 block of W. Jefferson Boulevard.....

Project at AC on the move

Route 5 postal carrier honored for 30 years

For more than 30 years, Sue Eichhorn has been a mail carrier at the Decatur Post Office, including the past 26 years on rural route five.
She was recently honored by the U.S. Postal Service for achieving that milestone. A certificate signed by E. Lynn Smith, the manager of the Fort Wayne district of the USPS, congratulated Eichhorn for her service and added, "Over the years, there have been many changes and improvements in the postal service. Lady Vikings' fourth quarter rally nets win over Warsaw in opener

The Huntington North High School girls' basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit after three quarters and rallied back to beat host Warsaw, 44-40, in the Lady Vikings' season-opener on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Census Bureau recognizes Andrews’ efforts

The town of Andrews has been recognized by the United States Census Bureau for its efforts in ensuring an accurate count for the 2010 Census.

Andrews' efforts were noted by the Complete Count Committee, a sub-group of the Census Bureau that tries to get communities to achieve the most precise count possible, said Andrews clerk-treasurer Bill Johnson.

"We put forth the effort to get as full of an account as we can to ensure the proper distribution of tax revenues," Johnson said.....

Hopewell served as natural learning center for Gene Stratton Porter

The brick shell of the Hopewell United Methodist Church in Wabash County no longer houses the praises and shouts of worshipers that were there when Rev. Mark Stratton, father of famed author Gene Stratton Porter, once founded the church. Like the cemeteries around it, it is simply a memorial to the Hopewell settlement where Porter was born on Aug. 17, 1863, during the Civil War.
The "four corners" is located approximately two miles north of U.S. 24 along County Road 500 E in Wabash County. Upon initial approach, a creek and trees meandering through the open field block the site of the church and cemetery.....

Banks to be sworn in Nov. 16

Columbia City resident Jim Banks will be officially sworn in as one of the newest members of the Indiana Senate, representing the District 17, on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

The swearing-in ceremony will be conducted by Supreme Court Justice Randall Shepard in the Statehouse Senate Chamber, in Indianapolis.

Banks, a graduate of Columbia City High School, earned a degree in political science from Indiana University in Bloomington.....

Zawadzki's career-high 32 carry Foresters past Madonna

Kellen Zawadzki scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Huntington University men's basketball team past visiting Madonna University 99-87 on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

The Foresters had just a 10-8 lead after eight minutes, but 14 points by Caleb Kennedy and 11 by Zawadzki throughout the remainder of the half let Huntington emerge at halftime with a 40-32 lead.

HU maintained control of the score for the opening of the second half, but a 10-2 run begun at the 12-minute mark by Madonna almost eclipsed HU's advantage. The Foresters recovered, however, and came away with the win.....

No Miss Huntington this year, says chair

Six arrested in drug bust; seek four more

The second drug interdiction operation in eight months in Decatur was aimed today at eight adults and two juveniles, charged with dealing in marijuana, cocaine, prescription pain medicine, and mushrooms. The operation is entitled "Operation Fall Harvest."

Honor Flight to depart Wednesday

Two FWCS schools recognized for gains in math, English

Waynedale and Adams elementary schools were recognized achievements in English and math.

Waynedale Elementary had a 63.2 percent growth in English, while Adams Elementary had a 65.9 percent growth in math. Both are members of Fort Wayne Community Schools.

The statistics are according to the Indiana Growth Model, which measures how much students learn in each content area over the course of a year. Here’s how it works.....

City offices closed Thursday for Veterans Day

FORT WAYNE – City of Fort Wayne offices, including City Utilities, Animal Care & Control, Community Center and the Weisser, Cooper and Jennings youth centers, will be closed Thursday in observance of Veterans Day.

There will be no leaf pick-up that day due to the holiday.


The City will have regular business hours Wednesday and Friday.

The City’s garbage and recycling pick-up will be unaffected by this holiday.

The Botanical Conservatory and City golf courses will be open regular hours Thursday. Veterans can play golf free of charge by showing veterans ID at City courses Thursday.....

Kramer to continue basketball career with Fort Wayne NBDL team

Former Huntington North High School star athlete Chris Kramer has signed with the NBA Development League's Fort Wayne Mad Ants in an attempt to fight for one of 17 spots on the team's 2010-2011 roster beginning Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the team's training camp.

The official announcement was made Wednesday, Nov. 3, in North Arena in front of many students and staff members of the high school. The Mad Ants' head coach Joey Meyer and team president Jeff Potter were also on hand.

Potter said it was nice to have a neighborhood player join the team, and they wanted to return to Huntington North to celebrate. He also considered the Mad Ants as Kramer's next step on his "quest to the NBA."....

Newcomers to take seats on Markle, Roanoke town councils

A couple of newcomers are anxious to take their seats on town councils in Roanoke and Markle after the first of the year.

"I'm excited to be returning," says Troy Karshner, the only current town council member to be returned to his seat. Karshner currently serves as vice president of the Roanoke Town Council. "I'm back in it ... I look forward to continue serving the town."

Karshner and Eric Sands will begin their four-year terms on the Roanoke council in January, following their election wins on Tuesday, Nov. 2.....

New traffic pattern in effect for State Route 3, Lima Road

FORT WAYNE – A new traffic pattern began Monday on State Route 3/Lima Road between Washington Center Road and Cook Road, the Indiana Department of Transportation Fort Wayne District said in a news release.

The change involved reducing both northbound and southbound traffic to one lane. The northbound left turn lane at Ludwig Road will remain open.....

Open houses for public input on city's light lease continue

FORT WAYNE – The City of Fort Wayne and Indiana Michigan Power will host another open-house style public meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight to answer questions about the City Light Lease Settlement agreement.

The agreement resolves issues surrounding the conclusion of the 35-year-old lease and is subject to approval from the Fort Wayne City Council and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The final open house is Nov. 15.....

VeggieTales creator will speak at Huntington University Tuesday

HUNTINGTON — VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer will speak at the Forester Lectures Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Merillat Centre for the Arts on the Huntington University campus.

Vischer’s original company, Big Idea Productions, launched the VeggieTales series in 1991 and today VeggieTales videos, some 50 million, can be found in a third of all American homes with young children. His current venture, Jellyfish Labs, produces and develops media content geared toward helping children grow in the Christian faith.....

Operation Help operating

Help has come to Operation Help.
The Decatur-based food bank shut down a week ago because of a lack of money and delayed delivery of government-provided groceries. Both problems have been resolved, however, and Operation Help is operating normally again.
Mary Jo Toole, who heads the food bank, said Thursday that the site in the basement of the Adams County Service Complex in Decatur is open today from 1-3 p.m. and will maintain its usual hours, which are 1-3 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday.
Toole noted that not only did the government food arrive, but Operation....

Kirkland school plaque will go to Adams Central

Ninety-three years after being placed on an interior wall of the new Kirkland Township High School, the large marble plaque with the names of the school trustee, the advisory board, the Adams County school superintendent, the building architect, and the builders of the school has been removed.
The plaque will be given to Adams Central Community Schools for display purposes, since the Kirkland Township school district was closed some 60 years ago when it became part of the AC district.....

Canterbury students named AP scholars

Forty-eight percent of the 162 Canterbury School students who sat for Advanced Placement (AP) exams last spring have been designated AP Scholars by The College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced-Placement Program exams.

Nationally, only about 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million high school students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.....

Veterans Day Dinner is Nov. 6 at American Legion Post 160

The annual free Huntington County Veterans Day Dinner will be hosted this year by the American Legion Post 160 in Roanoke and will be on Saturday, Nov. 6, from noon to 3 p.m.

Shively, Zawadzki click for 45 to carry Foresters past Indiana Tech in men's hoop opener

Tyler Shively and Kellen Zawadzki combined for 45 points to carry the Huntington University men's basketball team over host Indiana Tech 76-60 in the Foresters' season opener on Wednesday, Nov. 3.

Zawadzki scored 23 points and Shively had 22. Caleb Kennedy and Chris Kent backed up the lead duo with 12 and 10 points, respectively.....

State legislators to be at next HU Foundation breakfast meet

The Huntington University Foundation will host a breakfast on Nov. 10, at 7:45 to 9 a.m., in the Habecker Dining Commons.

State Sen. Travis Holdman and State Rep. Dan Leonard will discuss what the election results mean for the 2011 General Assembly.

Republican Holdman, an attorney from Markle, was appointed to his seat in March 2008. He ran against Democrat Robert Couse in the Nov. 2 election. Holdman has also served on the Huntington University Board of Trustees and the Huntington University Foundation Board of Directors.

HU women’s soccer team advances in MCC tourney

Huntington County tab:

Huntington University's women's soccer team will advance to the semifinal round of the Mid-Central Conference Tournament after the team defeated visiting Grace College, 2-1, in the first round on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Sam Cubic blasted in a 40-yard goal in the opening minutes of the game to give Huntington an early 1-0 lead.....

Stoffel takes sheriff's race over Ochs with almost 60 percent of vote

Republican Terry Stoffel took nearly 60 percent of the vote to become Huntington County's next sheriff, defeating independent candidate Steve Ochs in the Tuesday, Nov. 2, general election.

Stoffel will take office Jan. 1, when current Sheriff Kent Farthing leaves office.

Also claiming victory were Republican Cheryl Schenkel, who won the county recorder position over Democrat Andrew Krieg with 76 percent of the vote, and Republican Terri Boone - the only incumbent seeking a county-level office - retaining her county assessor position with a 73 percent victory over independent Polly Richardson.....

Thomas twins take Callithumpian Canter

Ian and Mitchell Thomas of Pennville were the top finishers in Sunday’s Callithumpian Canter at Bellmont High School’s cross country course in Decatur. Ian Thomas took the overall title in 16:51 and Mitchell Thomas followed in second in 17:03. Gavin Hisner of Decatur took third in 17:15.
Denise Conrad of Decatur was the top female, finishing in 20:17. Madison Fruchey of Huntertown was second female in 20:41 and Bailey Beery was third in 20:55.

Rekeweg wins sheriff race

Adams County Sheriff-elect Shane Rekeweg described his feeling as being, "overwhelmed," followed a convincing victory in Tuesday night's election. Rekeweg, a Republican, won the sheriff’s office election with a total of 4,805 votes over Democrat Jon Fuhrman (2,876 votes) and Independent Terry Nevil (1,881 votes).
"I am in complete awe at the trust the county has put in me," said Rekeweg.....

Yellow Hills is target of bank lawsuit

Yellow Hills Dairy Leasing, LLC, Vreba-Hoff Holding, LLC, Jackson Family Farms, LLC and Fifth Third Bank are being sued by Farmers Bank & Trust Co.

As of September 28 they owe nearly $730,000 to Farmers Bank & Trust Co., according to the lawsuit......

Boys scout out info at the city council meeting

Monday's Decatur City Council meeting, bumped up a day so as not to conflict with today's election, was more of an educational affair than a business meeting.
Webelos Scouts from Den 3 of Cub Scout Pack 3070, their leaders and some parents attended the meeting in City Hall, and the boys were given a full agenda by Mayor John Schultz. The Scouts got together with the mayor and council to talk and ask questions before the meeting, sat in on the meeting, then fired off a few more questions near the end of the meeting.....

New fund will aid NA students

Officials of North Adams Schools have established the North Adams School Fund (NASF) within the Adams County Community Foundation to offer assistance and support to needy local students who attend NACS schools.
Wylie Sirk, North Adams school superintendent, said in a news release, "The discussion for the fund began last school year. Since 2008, our community has witnessed a growing concern for families which have experienced serious financial challenges.....

Polls in Huntington County are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Voters must be registered and have a photo ID in order to vote.

It's too late for residents to register for this election, but the Huntington License Branch will be open special hours for any registered voter who still needs a valid photo ID.....

Pairings for the 39th annual IHSAA state finals in volleyball were established Saturday during semi-state play highlighted by the fourth appearance in school history for the Bellmont Squaws
The new format of the tournament has eight teams entering play at Worthen Arena on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie with four classes set to crown a champion. Worthen Arena has been home to the IHSAA state finals for the last three years with Bellmont winning a 3A championship in the initial year there in 2007.....

Last sentence given out in Wells slaying

The final sentencing in the Wells County slaying which involved four Decatur-area residents has been handed down.
The last of those sentenced in Wells Circuit Court at Bluffton was Dustin H. Jackson, 23, who got a 25-year prison term for pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious injury. Judge David Hanselman gave Jackson 35 years, but suspended 10 years, and ordered him to spend five years on probation after being released from custody.....

Norwell 3rd, Heritage 10th in band finals

Norwell placed third and Heritage 10th in Class C in Saturday's annual Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) finals for high school marching bands.
The 38th annual event was held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Also in Class C, Concordia finished eighth.
DeKalb was eighth and Fort Wayne North Side ninth in Class B.
Homestead took a third in Class A, for the largest schools.

Bauman to retire as Senior Center director after 14 years

When Myrna Bauman applied for the job as facility manager/activity director for the newly-constructed South Adams Senior Center, she felt like she had two strikes against her. First she had never had any previous experience of working in management at a senior center. Second, were she to be hired, the open house for the new center was scheduled for Feb. 29, 1996, and she and her husband, Steve, already had airplane tickets for a trip to the Bahama Islands.....
