FW Zoo offers ‘merry-not-scary’ Halloween fun

Pumpkins, animals and a friendly witch will take center stage when the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo celebrates the 31st annual Great Zoo Halloween from Oct. 16-31.
The zoo will be transformed into a pumpkin paradise for the “merry-not-scary” event. Children invited to trick-or-treat around the zoo grounds, where they will receive goodies at nine treat stations.
Ten to 12 tons of pumpkins and gourds, many of them decorated and carved, will adorn the zoo pathways.
New features at the event this year will be a mystery maze and mini-maze, a chance to chat with Broomhilda the Witch, meet farm animals in the Big Red Barn, try pumpkin bowling, check out the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium and see real bats in Australia after dark. The Australian Adventure Dairy Queen will be open for hot eats and cool treats.
The zoo will close for the season on Oct. 11 to prepare for the Oct. 16 opening for the Great Zoo Halloween. Hours from Oct. 16-31 will be from 6 to 8 p.m. weeknights and 5 to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $7 for children and $5 for adults. Halloween carnival-style games will cost an additional $1 each. The Eerie Express Train ride, taking visitors into the “haunted” woods of Franke Park, will cost an additional $2 per person.
