Parents to be charged for kids who skip school

PLYMOUTH — Authorities in Marshall County in northern Indiana say they plan to charge parents with crimes if their children don't attend school.

Prosecutor David Holmes tells the South Bend Tribune that parents who do not make a reasonable effort to get their children to school will be issued two written warnings. He says after that, they will be charged with a Class B misdemeanor, which provides for a sentence of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Holmes says truancy is a problem that requires cooperation between the school, parents and juvenile probation. He says parents aren't doing their part.....
