City, I&M approve pact to end light lease

East Allen Times:

FORT WAYNE – Fort Wayne officials and Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) announced Thursday they resolved issues surrounding the conclusion of the 35-year-old City Light lease.

The agreement must be approved by Fort Wayne City Council and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

The agreement would end ongoing disputes and litigation between the two parties and confirms I&M as the exclusive electric service provider for Fort Wayne customers, according to a news release from city officials. Currently, a lawsuit over the matter is pending in Allen County Superior Court.

Under terms of the agreement, I&M would pay the City a total of $39.2 million over 15 years, with $5 million of that coming as an upfront payment......

Lehman resigns as executive director of Swiss Heritage Village

Swiss Village executive director Gretchen Lehman has resigned her position at Swiss Heritage Village and Museum, a post that she has held since 2005. Her resignation is effective Dec. 31.
"I have some other things on my bucket list," said Lehman. "I don't want to be tied down all of the time with all of the events. I have met so many wonderful people, all the people that have come here. I wouldn't have met any of them if I wouldn't have had this position.....

HU women lose soccer finale; to host Grace in MCC tourney

Huntington University's women's soccer team lost its final match of its regular season to host Marian University 1-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Despite the loss, HU maintained a winning record in both the season and among Mid-Central Conference teams to take the No. 4 seed in the MCC Tournament beginning this week. The Foresters will play their first game of the MCC tourney against Grace College on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 3:30 p.m. at HU.....

Voting information set for Nov. 2 event

Longtime bank employee about to step down at the age of 93

The Bank of Geneva has announced that Clarence “Ittle” Buckingham is retiring from his Geneva office maintenance position at the end of October. His last day of work will be this Friday.
Buckingham, who is 93 years young, has worked at the Bank of Geneva for 29 years, following his retirement in 1981 from Naas Foods (now Red Gold), where he was employed for 38 years.....

Croner gains honor

Scot Croner, principal at Bellmont High School since 2008, has been named by the Indiana Association of School Principals as its District 3 High School Principal of the Year for 2010.

The only intersection which remains closed is Old Lincoln Highway and Webster Road due to several tall utility poles which were knocked over by high winds. Work to clear that intersection continued through the night....

Cowboys contain Bengals for DFL football championship

The Daily Democrat Cowboys remained perfect Saturday, defeating the Burkhalter Plumbing and Heating Bengals 14-0 in the DFL championship game played at Bob Worthman Stadium.
The Cowboys finished at 5-0 for the year and did not yield a touchdown the entire season. The Bengals moved the ball inside the Cowboys five-yard line in the final period, but lost the ball on a fumble.....

Touchdown in Van Wert County

A tornado that apparently developed near the Indiana-Ohio state line caused significant damage in Van Wert County, Ohio, at midday Tuesday, but no one was injured.
Van Wert County Emergency Management Director Rick McCoy reported that the twister struck about 11:15 a.m. as it moved north of US 224 toward Convoy, Ohio. Wind speeds were recorded at 80 to 85 mph....

High winds continue here today

A high-wind warning remained in effect for the Decatur area and much of northeast Indiana today, but no storms of the type that hit the area on Tuesday were expected.
The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reported in its morning edition that meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Syracuse confirmed that tornadoes touched down in Huntington, Whitley, Wabash and Van Wert counties. No serious injuries or deaths were reported.....

Tuesday's storms one of strongest systems in Midwest history

Tuesday's storms were part of one of the strongest weather systems in Midwest history, according to weather specialist Rick McCoy. McCoy said that National Weather Service personnel (NWS) in North Webster told him that before the system passed over, the barometric pressure would rival that of the Blizzard of 1978.
"They said that this storm blew up so fast and is so strong that it is often referred to as a, 'bomb,'" said McCoy, who a few weeks ago in the Berne Tri-Weekly News had predicted a very active fall tornado season in the latter part of October. "They said that this type of low pressure system is much more common over large bodies of water, and seldom occur over land."....

2011-2012 calendar receives school board approval

After its third appearance on the agenda, a calendar for the 2011-12 school year finally won approval from the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees.

The board adopted the calendar by three votes Monday night, Oct. 25.

Superintendent of Schools Tracey Shafer said the revised calendar attempted to accomplish several things, including a student start time in the third week of August, letting the semester run as late into December before Christmas as possible without shortening or lengthening the holiday vacation, and accommodating the ISTEP testing windows mandated by the state of Indiana....

Referendum, redesign are separate issues, officials say

G. Spahr leads Lady Viking runners to state cross country meet

Senior Gretchen Spahr led the way for the Huntington North High School girls' cross country team as it earned a ticket to the state meet next week at Terre Haute with a fifth place finish at the New Haven semi-state on Saturday, Oct. 23.

Spahr shook off a season of injury and illness to place 17th in 19:26.15 and lead a gritty pack effort by the Lady Vikings as they punched their ticket to state with a total of 164 points.

Carroll won the meet with 72 points. West Noble was second with 97 points, Columbia City was third with 108 points, Fort Wayne Concordia was fourth with 126 and DeKalb got the sixth and final qualifying spot with 180 points.....

INDIANAPOLIS — The unemployment rate in Allen County fell below the state average in September, according to reports released today by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Allen County's September unemployment rate was 9.8 percent, down 0.5 percent from the adjusted August rate. That dropped the county below the state's preliminary seasonally-adjusted rate of 10.1 percent, which was a drop of 0.1 percent from August. The U.S. unemployment rate for the month was unchanged at 9.6 percent....

Teenagers burned after gas tank explodes

East Allen Times:

Two teenage boys were badly burned and a third escaped injury at a campfire late Saturday night at a residence in the 18000 block of Tonkel Road in northern Allen County.

According to Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Brad Shultz, at approximately 11:10 p.m., he was dispatched to a report of a person on fire and upon his arrival at 11:16 p.m., he saw paramedics attending to a 15 year old boy with third degree burns to his face, neck and chest, the ISP said in a news release. ....

Jets bounce Bengals from tourney; set for Woodlan

Adams Central took care of business Thursday night in the opening round of Sectional 37 (2A) Volleyball play, handling Bluffton in straight games, 25-10, 25-11, and 25-13.
Senior Hali Wendel was her dominant self,, whacking in 18 kills with two blocks and 12 digs, and setter Alyssa Keller was busy with 30 assists, eight digs and five kills, plus an ace and a block.

Food bank broke

Decatur Operation Help, a food bank in use in the northern half of Adams County since 1983, will close Tuesday and Friday, the days it is normally open.
Operation Help President Mary Jo Toole said the closure is necessary since the site is out of food and out of money. Toole said she hopes more of each will arrive in the following week.
One problem, she noted, is that deliveries of government commodities have been delayed....

Three men with a combined 76 years of law enforcement experience are seeking to fill a pending vacancy in the Adams County Sheriff's office, with voters to determine on Nov. 2 who will fill that role.
With two-term incumbent Charles Padgett barred from seeking re-election because of term limits, two longtime members of the sheriff's department and a veteran member of the sheriff's reserve unit have thrown their broad-brimmed hats into the race. DENVER – A pair of big special teams plays early helped South Adams to a 14-0 lead on North Miami, and a late touchdown pass from Dustin Wanner to Nick Batt put the Starfires over the top as they beat the host Warriors 20-14 Friday night in varsity football to advance into the second round of Class A Sectional 35.
Justin Wygant put the Starfires (5-5) into great position on the opening kickoff, returning the ball 46 yards to the Warrior 35. It took South Adams eight plays to gobble up the remaining 35 yards as they took a 7-0 lead on a one-yard run by Wanner....

Pick-pocket suspect may be targeting elderly women

FORT WAYNE — The Fort Wayne Police Department claim three elderly women may be victims of what police claim is a hustling or pick-pocketing scheme.

The FWPD said in a news release that victims report being in a store parking lot, being approached by a subject offering assistance with their grocery cart or purchases, and then realizing shortly thereafter that their wallet has been removed from their purse.....

Business cards printed 20 years ago become treasures

On March 21, 1990, Mike Zehr, who operated a print shop on North Jefferson Street, just northeast of the First Bank of Berne, brought home business cards indicating his daughter, Twila, as operating a craft shop he had designated as, "Twila's Treasures." At the time, his daughter basically thought, "oh fine," and didn't take her father's dream serious. Snider dashes Lady Vikings' soccer hopes with big regional win

Fort Wayne Snider easily dismantled the Huntington North High School girls' varsity soccer, 7-1, at the Bellmont regional Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Snider knocked in four goals before the Lady Vikings scored on themselves to give the Lady Panthers a five-point advantage in the opening half. Shelby Bradford was able to hit the bottom corner of the Lady Panthers' net with 13:21 left in the first half to prevent an HNHS shutout, but Snider, which hadn't been scored on in the tourney series to that point, got two more goals of its own in the second half to ice the contest.....

City police dog to retire

An esteemed member of the Decatur Police Department is retiring effective January 1.
Ronny, the department's police dog for the last nine-plus years, is already on reduced duty due to hip dyslpasia, an ailment common to dogs. Jim Franze, the city's veteran K-9 officer, told Decatur City Council at its meeting Tuesday night that the dog's ailment first became noticeable a couple of years ago and has gotten considerably worse in the past year.....

Chaffins, who has always had an affinity for drawing, sketched a picture of the highly famed west coast merchandising group with the hope of getting close enough to James to get an autograph.....

Southbound lanes are open

After months of snarled traffic, the three new southbound lanes of Lima Road are now open.

According to Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) representative Stacie McCormick, traffic will no longer have to “cross over” to the northbound lanes at the north and south ends of the project limits between Wallen Road and Dupont Road.....

Bellmont's volleyball team enjoyed Senior Night festivities Thursday and, by the way, the Squaws downed Jay County in three games, 25-15, 25-8, and 25-14.
"That's something I started when I first started coaching here, to start the seniors and let them play in the first game. Considering what they've gone through, they deserve to play," stated head coach Criag Krull. It worked out Thursday that all six BHS seniors played that first game together.....

Bellmont held off a solid Wapahani squad, winning 25-23 in the first game, then taking the next two, 25-17, 25-20, to complete a 29-4 regular season.
The Squaws also downed Wes-Del in three (23, 17, 20) in the earlier match Saturday. Adams Central fell to both Wes-Del and Wapahani in the other two matches at the Bellmont Quad.
"Wes-Del was undersized, but definitely did a nice job against us," stated BHS coach Craig Krull.....

MARION — Both the Bellmont boys and girls cross country teams competed well Saturday at the Marion CC Regionals, and both finished in eighth place, three places short of qualifying for semistate action.
South Adams did better as both teams made it out, qualifying fourth in both races. Hannah Moore finished sixth in the girls race with a 19:17. Eric Isch led the boys with a 9th-pace finish in 16:06 for the Stars.....

A Settlers Monument paying homage to Anabaptist immigrants from Switzerland who settled in Berne in 1852 was unveiled Sunday during dedication ceremonies at the Muensterberg Plaza and clock tower site.
The six-foot-tall limestone carving — perched on a 12-foot base — depicts a man with his hands outstretched and a woman holding a baby. They are dressed in attire which would have been common in the 1850s....

HNHS girls place second at Marion Cross County Sectional

Even without three of its regular top seven, the Huntington North High School girls' cross country team grabbed second place at the Marion Cross County Sectional on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The Viking girls placed all five scoring runners in the top 11 finishers on the way to 38 points, which placed them second to a strong Columbia City team by 14 points.

The host school was third with 102 points, Eastbrook was fourth with 118 and Churubusco took the fifth and final regional-qualifying spot with 142 points.

The regional is Saturday, Oct. 16, at Marion.....

School board approves position changes

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees approved the merger of two positions and an addition of a support staff member in an effort to save money on Monday night, Oct. 11.

Superintendent of Schools Tracey Shafer told the board two specialist positions stood vacant, Technology Integration and Data Integration. He said $60,000 in grant money is available to put toward the technology position the first year, and he believed one qualified person could handle both positions if a secretary was in place to provide support to both the technology and maintenance department -both of which are experiencing the same situation of stretching personnel thin.....

Fiesta stylists to participate in Clip for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 16

Stylists at Fiesta Salon in Huntington are joining thousands of stylists across North America for the first annual Clip for the Cure event on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Fiesta stylists will give net proceeds from discounted haircuts on that day to benefit the Regis Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

Bellmont led 2-1 in intermission, but two second-half goals by New Haven proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs ousted the Squaws from the 2010 state soccer tourney with a 3-2 win in the opening game of the BHS Girls Soccer Sectional Monday.
Senior Brittany Thatcher and sophomore Andrea Fruchte tallied first-half goals for Bellmont, which closed out a successful 10-5-1 season. New Haven, paced by goalie Karisa Jacquay, blanked Bellmont in the second half.....

The realignment of the IHSAA State Volleyball Tournament will likely translate into a 3A Regional championship match at Bellmont, it was noted today by veteran Bellmont coach Craig Krull.
Bellmont will tangle with Peru in semi-final match of the Wayne Volleyball Sectional on Saturday, Oct. 23. A victory in that tourney, and the No. 4 Squaws are heavily favored, would put Bellmont at home on Tuesday, Oct. 26, versus the winner of Sectional 21 at Western. That winner may have a tough mid-week road trip as West Lafayette, Twin Lakes, and Frankfort are among the schools in the field.....

WorkOne leader delivers some good news

The president of the WorkOne employment and retraining agency addressed Adams County's unemployment situation at last week's meeting of the county commissioners and had good news about overall economic improvement in this corner of the state.
Kathleen Randolph told the executives that the county unemployment rate is 9.9 percent, with 1,503 people out of work, but that's much better than one year ago, when the county jobless level was 14.8 percent. The county ranks 48th among 92 counties in Indiana in its unemployment rate....

New Tech: a new way

One of the hallmarks of the New Tech method of education is tandem teaching, with two instructors assisting and advising a larger-than-usual class as two subjects are taught simultaneously, such as literature and biology.
Accordingly, when a luncheon meeting of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce featured a program on Monday about the "Jet Tech" system that began this year for freshmen at Adams Central High School, two people made the presentation: AC Superintendent Mike Pettibone and longtime ACHS business teacher Sharilyn Boots.....

South Adams’ Hannah Moore claimed her first sectional championship Tuesday night and led the Starfire girls to a second place finish in the Bellmont cross country sectional in Decatur.
Moore ran in a conservative lead pack through the first mile, but broke away in the latter stages of the 5-kilometer race and won in 19:48.31. She is the first female from South Adams to collect a cross county individual sectional title.....

A family member dies prematurely

Now, he's gone at the age of just 11. It was like the death of a family member.
Paycos Bill, a renowned equine racer from rural Decatur, died recently, perhaps from aneurysm, while being ridden by Callie Jo Friedt, his best friend, constant rider, owner, and trainer.....

Master Trooper Mike Jeffers' years of service to Huntington County have earned him the 2010 Police Officer of the Year award from the Huntington Kiwanis Club.

Jeffers was nominated by his supervisor, Indiana State Police Sgt. Tom Matheny, for the award, which was presented by Kiwanis representative Erv Ebersole during a club meeting on Thursday, Oct. 7.

Jeffers was selected for the honor from the group of Indiana State Police officers who work in Huntington County, Matheny said.....

Squaws lock up NHC spike title

Madison Schultz knocked down 11 kills in 19 attempts with only two errors, adding a solo block, a block-assist and three digs to lead Bellmont to a three-game sweep of Columbia City Thursday at the BHS court.
The win clinched the NHC championship for the Squaws, who went unbeaten in league play for the fifth straight season.
In six years under Craig Krull, the Squaws are now 41-1 in the NHC....

“Traveling covered bridge” makes visit to Ceylon Covered Bridge

The large crowd attending the hearing for the Ceylon Covered Bridge this past Thursday evening was surprised by a special visitor that came cruising into the bridge parking lot - another “covered bridge.”
This one was constructed in a small scale to the same image as the celebrated structure and was built over a golf cart. Its designers were Nancy and Sean Dedert of Geneva. It had originally been built for a parade on Sept. 18 that raised money for the cause of muscular dystrophy. At the time, it won a prize for the best decorated entry in the parade.....

The IHSAA conducted its tournament draw for the upcoming state football tournament Sunday night, and several intriguing matchups await in the Class A Sectional 35 field.

Also, on opening night, South Adams (3-5) will make the long drive to Denver, Indiana to take on North Miami (6-2)....

Youth ballet to perform Snow White

The New American Youth Ballet will perform Snow White at 2:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Scottish Rite Auditorium.

The production features 50 dancers ages 8-18 who train ballet 10 to 30 hours per week at the New American Youth Ballet. The lead role of Snow White will be performed by Chelsea Dumas, 17, and Hailey Meert, 16, both of Fort Wayne. Mood at covered bridge hearing optimistic but cautious

John Mann, a member of the South Adams School Board laughs when he recalls his first memories of the Ceylon Covered Bridge. Mann remembers that that there was a large hump at the time on the west side of the bridge. When the school bus in which he was riding approached the bridge, he and his friends would take the very back seats so that when they went over the bump, they would be jolted up in the air out of their seats.....

Murals on ceilings and walls of county courthouse to be documented by group

The Huntington County Courthouse will soon have its murals on the ceilings and walls of the building documented once a contract is awarded to an interested company.

The project is funded by a Historic Preservation Fund Grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources's Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, and a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Cathy Wright, representative for Indiana Landmarks's North Central Field Office, says the project will document any decorations, including most ceilings and other murals, through methods such as pictures and tracings....

Fireworks fund-raising starts early as organizers shoot for bigger, better show

An early start in raising funds for Huntington's 2011 fireworks display could result in a bigger, better show.

Fireworks purchased before Dec. 31 will be discounted by 30 percent, says Jennifer Fisher, of American Legion Post 7, which sponsors the display.

Donors of specific amounts will be recognized with yard signs and banners that will be placed along Jefferson Street near Kriegbaum Field during the fireworks display.

Parade scheduled for Oct. 25th

Decatur's annual Callithumpian Parade will be an early one this year, scheduled for Monday, October 25, but the annual fireworks show may not go off at all.
Travis Alexander, representing the city's Callithumpian Committee, appeared before Decatur City Council on Tuesday night to request several street closings. In so doing, he revealed dates for the parade and fireworks.....

Isch to be named Grand Marshal of parade

Larry Isch, recently retired from First Bank of Berne, has been selected as the 2010 Callithumpian Parade Grand Marshall.
Isch has been a member of the parade committee for 35 years and works diligently to make the parade a success, the Calllithumpian Committee said in making the announcement.

Friday send off for a diverse group of kids

FORT WAYNE — The Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission will send off 19 fifth grade students to the city-sponsored camp that's the first of its kind.

At 5 p.m. Friday in the Omni Room of the City-County building the group of students, from various racial, cultural, religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, will depart for the multicultural human rights camp, city officials said in a news release. The camp will teach the students about inter-cultural awareness and human rights.....

FORT WAYNE — Rave Motion Pictures and Imax Corp. reached an agreement to retrofit 13 Rave multiplex locations across the country, including the one at Jefferson Pointe in Fort Wayne, with Imax digital theater systems.

“It’s very clear that consumers associate the Imax brand with the best way to go to the movies, and we believe that sentiment fits ideally with the direction and image of the Rave brand,” said Tom Stephenson, Rave’s president and CEO, in the recent announcement of the deal....

Lucky cigar, other creepy items on display at History Center during Fright Night

FORT WAYNE — Patrons can get a glimpse of the "lucky cigar" that was smoked by executioner during Fort Wayne's last public execution in 1883 during the History Center's participation in this year’s Downtown Fright Night Oct. 23 from 5-9 p.m.

Museum goers can experience the old city jail in the basement of the History Center, just as generations of inmates did until 1971. Get goose bumps in the iron cells that witnessed several deaths and untold horrors. Also, see the noose, bandages, and other creepy artifacts from the 1883 execution of Sam McDonald (including his murder weapon) on display in the museum’s underground level.....

Natalie Spahr picks up for sister and leads HNHS girls to NCC cross country crown

Senior Natalie Spahr picked up the baton from her injured sister and won the North Central Conference Cross County individual championship to pace the Huntington North High School girls to the team title on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Running without several regulars in the lineup, including defending conference champion Gretchen Spahr, the Lady Vikings placed all five scoring runners among the top 10 finishers to score 28 points and easily top runner-up Marion, which had 62.....

Hoagland, Monroeville schools out

Elementary schools in Monroeville and Hoagland will be closed as part of a $6.8 million annual cost-cutting plan approved Tuesday evening by the East Allen County Schools' board of education.
The possible closure of six elementary schools and the transformation of Paul Harding High School into a magnet school had first been announced last month by EACS Superintendent Karyle Green in light of the district's financial shortfall.....

Boys and girls club executive director Howell resigns for new post

Adams County Boys and Girls Club executive director Michael Howell announced on Tuesday that he is resigning his post, effective Nov. 2. Howell will be assuming the responsibility of executive director of the Huntington County Community Foundation.
Howell, who originally came from Huntington County, called the move a “tough call to make,” but noted that he is returning to his home area where he can be closer to his parents and family....

I-469 near Minnich restricted through Friday

Motorists may want to avoid westbound I-469 near the Minnich Road exit through Friday.

The right lane will be restricted while crews complete asphalt patching, the Indiana Department of Transportation Fort Wayne District said in a news release.

BERNE—Adams Central got back on the winning track in volleyball Thursday night traveling to the Stardome to extract a 25-17, 27-25, 25-14 triumph from the South Adams Starfires in ACAC competition.
The Jets, now 12-7 on the year and 4-2 in ACAC play, rode the hitting of Hali Wendel who finished with 19 kills, two aces, two blocked shots and 12 digs. Bess Fiechter also had a big night for the Jets with 17 digs and eight kills while Alyssa Keller played her usual steady game with 26 assists, 12 digs, three kills, and two aces. Sarah Soldner led the Jets in digs with 19 and added a pair of assists to go with three kills.
Other Jet contributers included Abby Snyder with eight digs, four assists, two aces, and a kill, Alexa Baller with seven digs and an ace, Chelsie Eads with four kills and digs and one solo block, and Jenae Blackburn with one ace and dig.....

BERNE—South Adams claimed its boys' and girls high school cross-country invitational titles on Saturday, winning by wide margins.
The Lady Starfires triumphed over second-place Southern Wells, 42 to 117, and the Starfires were victorious over Northfield, 46 to 80.

FORT WAYNE — Missing senior captain Kyle Lehrman, the Bellmont boys cross country team battled in the annual Northeast Hoosier Conference race Saturday on the IPFW course and finished sixth with 133 points.
Lehrman suffered a broken leg recently obviously putting him out for the season and that forced BHS coach Randy Hisner to run a no-senior line-up with four of the five harriers being in their first-ever NHC meet and three of those are running cross country for the first time in their career.....

PAL enjoying record football enrollment

The Huntington Police Athletic League has reported record enrollment for the fall 2010 football season.

Tom Hughes, City of Huntington assistant police chief and secretary/treasurer of the PAL, says that about 500 youth are enrolled on 28 flag football teams and eight tackle football teams.

The increase represents between 25 and 50 more enrollments than last year.....

Allen County 4-H plans 4-H annual meeting, volunteert recognition

The Berne Community Development Corporation (CDC) will dedicate the Settlers Monument in the Muensterberg Plaza at the corner of US 27 and SR218 in Berne on Sunday, Oct. 17, beginning at 2 p.m.
Jerome and Barbara Lehman of Terre Haute donated the funds for the monument, officials said in a news release....

The dock, 19 feet long and 4 feet wide, is courtesy of Greg Larrabee of Decatur, a Bellmont High School senior who built the structure as an Eagle Scout project on Kekionga Lake, by Evergreen Court, off Mercer Ave.....

It has been over 40 years since Carol Longenberger consented to assist Judy Williams for a short time as crosswalk safety guard for Adams Central High School. During that time, she has assisted countless numbers of students in crossing the street to safety on their way to and from school.
“One thing is certain; you have to be there,” said Longenberger. “It doesn’t matter what the weather is like or how you feel, somebody has to be taking care of that job. Rain is the worst, especially storms with wind. You can’t hold an umbrella but you still have to get the children across the street. That gets pretty miserable sometimes.”....

Starfires claim team titles at small school invite

South Adams put five runners in the top five of both the boys and girls’ races Saturday at its small school cross country invitational and swept the team titles in the cool and wet conditions.
The Starfire girls scored 42 points, outdistancing second place Southern Wells by 75 points. The Starfire boys scored 46 points and beat Northfield by 34.....

Sale of Camryn Industries could be a good thing, says mayor

Berne Mayor John Minch confirmed on Thursday that Camryn Industries, located at 917 Liechty Road in Berne, is up for sale and that there are potential buyers that are interested.
“It’s awfully early in the game,” said Minch. “There are potential buyers. As far as we know, it would still be Camryn Industries. It would go to investors who would purchase it. It is such a complex issue.”
Minch said that to his knowledge, the sale, if it occurs, would be a positive action for the company and the town of Berne.....
